How heat recovery ventilation works

A heat recovery ventilation system, often called an HRV or MVHR, runs two quiet air streams through a central heat exchanger. Stale, moist air is drawn out of wet areas while fresh outdoor air is filtered and delivered to living areas and bedrooms.

As the two streams pass through the exchanger, most of the heat from the outgoing air transfers to the incoming air without the two ever mixing. In winter the fresh air arrives pre warmed; in summer the process works in reverse.

  • Filtered fresh air delivered continuously
  • Stale, humid air extracted from kitchens, bathrooms and laundries
  • Recovers a large share of the heat in the outgoing air
  • Balanced airflow rather than draughts from open windows

Why Melbourne homes benefit

Newer homes are built tight to keep heating and cooling costs down, which is good for energy use but leaves moisture, cooking smells and indoor pollutants with nowhere to go. The usual response is opening a window, which undoes the heating or cooling you just paid for.

Heat recovery ventilation solves both at once: the air stays fresh and drier, and the energy stays inside. It suits airtight new builds, deep renovations, homes with condensation or mould concerns, and households sensitive to dust and pollen.

  • Helps control condensation, damp and mould
  • Reduces incoming dust and pollen through filtration
  • Keeps windows closed for security, noise and allergies
  • Works alongside your existing heating and cooling

Design and installation

An HRV system needs proper design: correct airflow for the number of occupants and wet areas, duct runs sized for low noise, and a sensible location for the unit and the outside intake and discharge.

We plan the system around your floor plan and ceiling space, install ducting and grilles to match the rest of your fitout, and commission the unit so airflows are balanced and verified.

Ongoing care is simple: filters are checked and replaced periodically, and we can include the unit in your regular service visit.

  • Airflow calculations for your floor plan
  • Ceiling or roof space mounted units
  • Ducting and grilles matched to your interior
  • Commissioning with balanced supply and extract
  • Filter changes as part of routine servicing

Frequently asked questions

Is heat recovery ventilation the same as air conditioning?

No. Ventilation replaces stale indoor air with filtered fresh air and recovers heat while doing so. It works alongside heating and cooling rather than replacing it.

Will it make the house cold in winter?

No. Incoming fresh air is pre warmed by the heat in the air being extracted, so it arrives close to indoor temperature.

Can it be retrofitted to an existing home?

In many cases yes, where there is accessible ceiling or roof space for the unit and ducting. We assess this during the site visit.

How noisy is it?

Correctly sized ducting and a well located unit keep it very quiet in living areas. Running continuously at low speed is both quieter and more effective than short bursts.
